A complex attack on a Shiite Mosque in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, killed at most 38 believers. It broke two months of relative calm in this historic Taliban stronghold. This incident highlights the danger posed by the growing presence of Islamic State.
According to SITE Intelligence Group,
Islamic State claimed that the bombing was carried out by two suicide bombers on Saturday. This attack came one week after an Islamic State bombing that killed some 100 people in Kunduz’s Shiite mosque. In recent months, the extremist group’s regional affiliate Islamic State – Khorasan Province (or ISKP) has targeted Afghanistan’s Shiite minorities repeatedly.
