The first meeting between President Biden and France’s President Emmanuel Macron took place over a deal made by the U.S., United Kingdom for Australia to receive nuclear-powered submarines. This was part of American efforts in countering China’s power in the Pacific.
Both sides agreed that communication would have been beneficial in this situation. It said that Mr. Biden reaffirmed his commitment to discussing matters of strategic importance to France and European allies. The joint statement stated that Mr. Macron had said Philippe Etienne would be returning to Washington next week, after he was recalled by the Joint Statement.
