Afghanistan’s Fall to Taliban Leaves Its D.C. Diplomats in Limbo

WASHINGTON—When Jawad Raha returned to his diplomatic post in Washington from his last trip to Afghanistan in early August, the Taliban had been capturing provincial capitals across the country, but he still believed the U.S.-backed government could fend them off.

“People were worried because of the fast pace of the Taliban advancement,” Mr. Raha, a seasoned Afghan diplomat, said. “But there was still hope.”
